Jara Cave: Prehistoric Rock Art in Egypt's Western Desert

Dating back to 7,700–5,300 BC, the cave's engravings and paintings offer a window into a time when the Sahara was a green, fertile savannah teeming with wildlife.

What Is Jara Cave?

Jara Cave is a limestone cave located approximately 150 kilometres southeast of Bahariya Oasis in the Egyptian Western Desert. Discovered by German explorer Gerhard Rohlfs in 1873 and rediscovered by archaeologist Carlo Bergmann in 2000, the cave contains over 100 rock engravings and paintings depicting giraffes, ostriches, gazelles, cattle, and human figures engaged in hunting and daily life.

The art dates to the Neolithic period, when this region received regular rainfall and supported abundant vegetation and animal populations. Jara Cave is considered one of the most significant archaeological sites in Egypt's Western Desert.

The cave is typically visited as part of a multi-day desert trek from Bahariya Oasis, often combined with the White Desert and Black Desert.

1. Day 1: Depart Cairo to Bahariya Oasis. Visit the Black Desert and Crystal Mountain. Camp in the White Desert.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Jara Cave is between October and April when desert temperatures are comfortable for exploration. Summer months (June–August) can reach 45°C+ and are not recommended. Winter nights can drop near freezing, so warm layers are essential.
