About Bahariya Oasis

Bahariya (also spelled El-Bawiti) is one of the five major oases in Egypt's Western Desert. With a population of around 30,000 people, it's a lively agricultural town surrounded by date palms and olive groves. The oasis sits in a depression about 100 meters below the surrounding desert plateau, creating a unique microclimate that has supported human habitation for thousands of years. Today it serves as the primary base for all White Desert and Black Desert safari tours.

Hot Springs & Natural Pools

Bahariya is famous for its natural hot springs. The most popular is Bir Sigam, a natural hot spring pool where locals and tourists bathe. The water temperature is naturally warm year-round (around 35–40°C). After a dusty desert safari, soaking in a hot spring is the perfect way to unwind.

Valley of the Golden Mummies

Discovered in 1996, this archaeological site contains hundreds of Greco-Roman mummies with gilded masks. While the actual tomb is closed, the Bahariya Museum displays several mummies and artifacts. It's one of the most significant archaeological finds in modern Egypt.

English Mountain (Gebel al-Ingleez)

A hilltop viewpoint used by British forces in World War I to monitor desert routes. Today it offers panoramic sunset views over the entire oasis and surrounding desert — one of the most photogenic spots in the Western Desert.

Getting to Bahariya Oasis from Cairo

Bahariya Oasis is approximately 370 km (4 hours) from Cairo via a well-paved desert highway. All Bedouin Trails tours include 4x4 transport from Cairo to Bahariya and back. The drive itself is scenic, crossing the desert plateau with views stretching to the horizon. Public buses from Cairo's Turgoman station also run to Bahariya (5–6 hours) but offer less flexibility.

Best Time to Visit Bahariya Oasis

October to April is the ideal season. Daytime temperatures are pleasant (20–28°C) and perfect for exploring the oasis on foot. November to February are the most popular months. Summer visits are possible — the hot springs are refreshing in any season — but desert safari tours from Bahariya are best avoided in peak summer heat (June–August).
