What to Pack for a Weiße Wüste Trip
Packing right for a desert safari can make the difference between a comfortable trip and a miserable one. The Weiße Wüste has extreme temperature swings — hot days and cold nights — so layering and preparation are key. Here is our complete packing guide based on years of desert experience.
What We Provide (You Don't Need to Bring)
On all Bedouin Trails tours, we provide:
- Sleeping bags (rated for cold desert nights)
- Sleeping mats and ground covers
- Extra blankets
- All meals and cooking equipment
- Unlimited drinking water
- Hot beverages (tea, coffee)
- First aid kit
- Camping chairs
Essential Items to Pack
Clothing
- Light, long-sleeved shirts — cotton or linen for sun protection during the day
- Long trousers — lightweight and breathable, protect from sun and sand
- Warm fleece or jacket — essential for cold desert evenings (temperatures drop significantly after sunset)
- Thermal base layer — for winter trips (December–February) when nights can approach freezing
- Shorts — optional for around camp
- Warm hat and gloves — for winter nights
- Change of clothes — at least one spare set for multi-day trips
Footwear
- Sturdy closed-toe shoes or hiking boots — for walking on rocky desert terrain
- Sandals or flip-flops — for around camp and relaxing
Sun Protection
- Wide-brimmed sun hat — essential — desert sun is intense
- Sunglasses — with UV protection (the white chalk can be blinding)
- High-SPF sunscreen (50+) — apply generously and frequently
- Lip balm with SPF — the desert air is very dry
Wind and Sand Protection
- Headscarf, buff, or bandana — to cover mouth and nose during windy or sandy conditions
Personal Items
- Personal medications — bring any prescription medications you need
- Toiletries — toothbrush, toothpaste, wet wipes (no showers in the desert)
- Personal water bottle — reusable bottle to carry water from our supply
- Camera and extra batteries — the desert light is extraordinary for photography. Cold nights drain batteries faster
- Power bank — no electricity in the desert, charge your phone before departure
- Headlamp or flashlight — essential for moving around camp at night
- Small daypack — for carrying personal items during exploration walks
What NOT to Pack
- Heavy luggage — space in the 4x4 is limited. One small bag per person is ideal
- High heels or dressy shoes — you will be walking on sand and rocks
- Valuable jewellery — leave expensive items at your hotel in Kairo
- Too many electronics — there is no electricity to recharge. Bring a power bank instead
- Alcohol — not provided or recommended in the desert heat
Pack light and smart. Everything you bring will be covered in a fine layer of desert sand by the end of the trip — that's part of the charm!
Seasonal Packing Tips
Autumn (October–November)
The most comfortable season. Days are warm (25–30°C) and nights are cool (10–15°C). A light jacket is sufficient for evenings. Ideal packing conditions — no extreme gear needed.
Winter (December–February)
Days are pleasant (18–22°C) but nights can be very cold (2–8°C). Pack a warm jacket, thermal base layers, warm hat, and gloves. A hot water bottle for the sleeping bag is a nice luxury.
Spring (March–April)
Similar to autumn with warm days and cool nights. March can bring occasional sandstorms (khamsin winds), so a good headscarf and eye protection are especially important.
