Schwarze Wüste Ägypten: A Guide to the Volcanic Desert

The Schwarze Wüste (El-Sahra El-Souda) is one of the most visually striking landscapes in Ägypten's Westliche Wüste. Located between Bahariya-Oase and the Weiße Wüste, this dramatic terrain features dark volcanic hills covered in black dolerite and basalt stones — creating a stark contrast with the golden sand and the chalk-white formations further south.

What Is the Schwarze Wüste?

The Schwarze Wüste is a region of volcanic origin where ancient eruptions deposited dark dolerite rocks across the hills and desert floor. The black stones absorb heat, making the area shimmer in the midday sun. From a distance, the hills look like they've been dusted with charcoal. The landscape is dotted with cone-shaped mountains, some climbable, offering panoramic views of the surrounding desert.

Unlike the Weiße Wüste's wind-carved chalk formations, the Schwarze Wüste's scenery was shaped by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Together, they form one of the most photogenic desert contrasts on Earth.

What to See in the Schwarze Wüste

• Gebel El-Marsous — named 'El-Marsous' because its basalt rocks appear neatly stacked on top of each other. It is an ancient extinct volcanic crater, made of sandstone hills covered with erosion-resistant layers of basalt and dolerite dating back to the Jurassic period. The highest peak in the area, offering 360-degree views of the Schwarze Wüste and Bahariya-Oase
• Volcanic cone hills — dozens of dark, cone-shaped hills scattered across the landscape
• Black dolerite stones — the desert floor is covered in dark volcanic stones that crunch underfoot
• Kristallberg — located between the Black and Weiße Wüstes, this quartz crystal ridge glitters in sunlight (often visited as part of Schwarze Wüste tours)
• Desert wildlife — desert foxes, lizards, and eagles can be spotted in the area

How to Visit the Schwarze Wüste

The Schwarze Wüste is located approximately 20 km south of Bahariya-Oase along the desert track towards the Weiße Wüste. It is only accessible by 4x4 vehicle and is almost always visited as part of a larger desert safari tour that includes both the Black and Weiße Wüstes.

Photography in the Schwarze Wüste

The Schwarze Wüste is a photographer's dream. The contrast between dark volcanic hills and golden sand creates dramatic compositions at any time of day. The best light is during golden hour (sunrise and sunset) when the dark stones glow with warm tones. Climbing the summit of English Mountain at sunset provides one of the best photographic viewpoints in the entire Westliche Wüste.

Best Time to Visit

Like all Westliche Wüste destinations, the Schwarze Wüste is best visited between October and April. The dark stones absorb significant heat, making summer visits (June–August) uncomfortable. Winter visits offer comfortable daytime temperatures and cool evenings for camping.
